A wonderful day in Kojonup under the guidance of Elders Cheryl and Deborah Michaels, this was the first of our small, temporary installations. They chose the site for the installation to be the Rose Maze at Kojonup Visitor's Centre. This maze is a symbol of unity and harmony for the town - weaving together the stories of a Noongar, English and Italian woman.
The long-neck turtle visits here from the sacred spring. After being welcomed by the Elders with a fire and tea, we set to work, unloading 500 rugs, sorting them into colour piles, and letting Cheryl direct the creation of the turtle. We were then taken to the sacred spring to see where the turtles lived.
The spring has its own history - and it was an honour to hear Cheryl and Deborah yarning about their lives growing up, the significance of the spring and the importance of the turtle - showing the health of the waters.
